Celebration of Learning 2010 - 16/10/2010

CYDC's Fun Day exceeded all our expectations when  hundreds of children and families attended the event at Prince Philip Centre on what turned out to be a nice sunny day. The Fun Day was sponsored by UnionLearn, the education arm of the TUC (Trades Union Congress).

There were more than enough events taking place to keep all the children, young people and adults occupied throughout the day. There were also plenty of food to keep everyone going right to the end. Star attraction was the Rugby taster training and mini matches for the younger children. We also had the opportunity to show off the new Chapeltown Cougers Under 7's Rugby kit,  which was kindly sponsored by Unite Trade Union.

We would like to thank Sharon Burke, Adam Fox and Mick Ball of UnionLearn, Dean Thomas the Jamaican National Rugby Team Coordinator, Sam Horner Leeds Rhinos Development Coach, our own Rugby Coordinator Steve Walker and all the CYDC staff for making this event a success.

VICTORIA CROSS HERO LANCE CORPORAL JOHNSON BEHARRY VISITS CYDC - 18/10/2010

On Monday evening we were blessed with the appearance of Lance Corporal Johnson Beharry who spoke to a large gathering of young people fron Chapeltown Youth Development Centre and Palace Youth Project.

He spoke about his experiences during the Iraq War and about being awarded the Victoria Cross for twice saving members of his unit from ambushed whilst under fire. He was shot in the head and shoulder but continued to rescue his colleagues from a burning vehicle.

Lance Corporal Behary is the only man alive who has been awarded the Victoria Cross. His talk was inspiring for the young people who all fully appreciated his appearance at CYDC.

Lance Corporal Johnson Gideon Beharry VC (born 26 July 1979(1979-07-26), in Grenada), of the 1st Battalion, Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment, is a British Army soldier who, on 18 March 2005, was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration for valour in the British and Commonwealtharmed forces, for twice saving members of his unit from ambushes on 1 May and again on 11 June 2004 at Al-Amarah, Iraq. He sustained serious head injuries in the latter engagement. Beharry was formally invested with the Victoria Cross by Queen Elizabeth II on 27 April 2005.

Mandela Warriors Achieve Club mark - 17/02/2011

Leeds Mandela Warriors Achieves Clubmark

Today, Friday 1st of April, our partners Mandela Warriors recieved notification that it has fulfilled all of the criteria to achieve 3 - Star Clubmark status.  Clubmark is the recognition by England Basketball Association, the sports governing body, that the club is developing sport in it's community and has a definate plan in place for the future development of the club, including partnership links with schools and other community organisations. These development plans are measured against strict criteria and clubs who achieve Clubmark are the ones who put time, effort and a lot of work into prioritising the safeguarding and development of young players, as well as ensuring that all coaches and officials at the club are competent and qualified to take the club forward. This follows on from the Warriors senior team clinching the Leeds District Basketball Premier League title.  Congratulations to everyone associated with Mandela Warriors from the masses at Chapeltown Youth Development Centre.

FOOTBALL RESULTS AND FIXTURES - 28/03/2011

Things are looking up on the football front with 3 teams winning their leagues and the strong posibility of 2 others doing the same within the next week. CYDC FC Under 12's, 14's, and 17's teams are all champions of their divisions, with the Under 11's and CFYDC - Chance Open age team in a good position to clinch the title in their division. This shows a big improvement in the performance of the football section and a tribute to the hard work put in by all the coaching staff at CYDC FC.
